Academic life at Springfield College’s 100-acre campus is, in part, centered around the four-story, 57,000-square-foot Babson Library overlooking Naismith Green. The library, which was originally built in 1971, was transformed into a modern “Learning Commons.” Renovations to Babson Library replaced the concrete brutalist styling typical of its time into a welcoming facility that embraces natural light. These upgrades represent the first significant renovation since the building was constructed. The project scope included demolition and abatement, the removal of the masonry infill along the south (main) façade, and demolition of the roof down to the structure. The MEP systems were removed as well with selected demolition of duct work and plumbing. The main exterior entry stair was demolished and an electrical transformer was relocated. The front of the building was reconfigured to function more as a welcoming plaza, with the south facing front of the building site sloping down to a new courtyard-style entry.
